Fear versus Anxiety
Anxiety is an alerting signal; it warns of impending danger and enables a person to take measures to deal with a threat. Fear is a similar alerting signal, but should be differentiated from anxiety.
Fear is a response to a known, external, definite, or non conflictual threat; Anxiety is a response to a threat that is unknown, internal, vague, or conflictual.
Anxiety is a normal emotion, a common reaction to the stresses of everyday life. Many people feel anxious, or nervous, when faced with a problem. When this worry begins to preoccupy a person’s thoughts to the point that psychosocial functioning is impeded, an anxiety disorder may be diagnosed. For people with anxiety disorders, worry and fear are constant and overwhelming, and can be crippling.
Understanding Anxiety Disorder:
- Anxiety disorders affect millions. Most anxiety disorders begin in childhood, adolescence, and early adulthood. They occur slightly more often in women than in men.
- Anxiety is the body’s natural response to danger, an automatic alarm that goes off when you feel threatened, under pressure, or are facing a stressful situation. Anxiety isn’t always a bad thing. In fact, anxiety can help you stay alert and focused, spur you to action, and motivate you to solve problems. But when anxiety is constant or overwhelming, when it interferes with your relationships and activities, it stops you from being functional—that’s when you’ve crossed the line from normal, productive anxiety into the territory of anxiety disorders.

What causes anxiety disorder?
The exact cause of anxiety disorders is unknown; but anxiety disorders — like other forms of mental illness are not the result of personal weakness, a character flaw, or poor upbringing. As scientists continue their research on mental illness, it is becoming clear that many of these disorders are caused by a combination of factors, including changes in the brain, environmental stress and pre conditioning.
Like other brain illnesses, anxiety disorders may be caused by problems in the functioning of brain circuits that regulate fear and other emotions. Studies have shown that severe or long-lasting stress can change the way nerve cells within these circuits transmit information from one region of the brain to another. Other studies have shown that people with certain anxiety disorders have changes in certain brain structures that control memories linked with strong emotions. Certain environmental factors, such as a trauma or significant event may trigger an anxiety disorder in people who have an inherited susceptibility to developing the disorder. Human brain doesn’t understand the difference between virtual and reality. It responds the same to virtual and real stimuli.
Types and Symptoms of Anxiety Disorder?
Panic disorder: Feelings of terror that strike suddenly and repeatedly with no warning. Other symptoms include sweating, chest pain, palpitations (unusually strong or irregular heartbeats), and a feeling of choking, which may make you feel like having a heart attack or “going crazy.”
Social anxiety disorder: Also called social phobia, social anxiety disorder involves overwhelming worry and self-consciousness about everyday social situations. The worry often centers on a fear of being judged by others, or behaving in a way that might cause embarrassment or lead to ridicule.
Specific phobias: A specific phobia is an intense fear of a specific object or situation, such as snakes, heights, or flying. The level of fear is usually inappropriate to the situation and may cause the person to avoid common, everyday situations.
Generalised anxiety disorder: This disorder involves excessive, unrealistic worry and tension, even if there is little or nothing to provoke the anxiety.
How Are Anxiety Disorders Diagnosed.
If symptoms of an anxiety disorder are present, the doctor will begin an evaluation by asking you questions about your medical history and performing a physical exam. Although there are no lab tests to specifically diagnose anxiety disorders, the doctor may use various tests to look for physical illness as the cause of the symptoms.
If no physical illness is found, you may be referred to a Clinical Psychologist, or another mental health professional that is specially trained to diagnose and treat anxiety disorders. Clinical psychologists use specially designed interview and assessment tools to evaluate a person for an anxiety disorder.
Clinical psychologist based on his/her diagnosis of your report of the intensity and duration of symptoms, including any problems with daily functioning caused by these symptoms, the psychologist’s observation of the patient’s attitude and behaviour. The psychologist then determines if the patient’s symptoms and degree of dysfunction indicate a specific anxiety disorder.
When to seek professional help for Anxiety Disorders.
While self-help coping strategies for anxiety can be very effective, if your worries, fears, or anxiety attacks have become so great that they’re causing extreme distress or disrupting your daily routine, it is important to seek professional help.
If you’re experiencing a lot of physical anxiety symptoms, consider getting a medical checkup. Your doctor can check to make sure that your anxiety isn’t caused by a medical condition, such as a thyroid problem, hypoglycemia, or asthma. Since certain drugs and supplements can cause anxiety, your doctor will also want to know about any prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal remedies, and recreational drugs you’re taking.
If your physician rules out a medical cause, the next step is to consult with a therapist who has experience treating anxiety attacks and anxiety disorders. The therapist will work with you to determine the cause and type of your anxiety disorder and devise a course of treatment.
How Are Anxiety Disorders Treated.
Much progress has been made in the last two decades in the treatment of people with mental illnesses, including anxiety disorders. Although the exact treatment approach depends on the type of disorder, one or a combination of the following therapies may be used for most anxiety disorders:
Medication: Drugs used to reduce the symptoms of anxiety disorders include anti-depressants and anxiety reducing drugs. These medication may help you in calming your physical symptoms.
Psychotherapy: Psychotherapy (counselling) addresses the emotional response to your anxieties. It is a process in which trained clinical psychologist help you by talking through strategies for understanding and dealing with your anxiety problems.
Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy: This is a particular type of psychotherapy in which you learn to recognize and change thought patterns and behaviours that lead to troublesome feelings and anxieties.
Relaxation therapy: This is a specific psychological intervention in which you will be trained to control your physical symptoms by training your body to relax.
Can Anxiety Disorders Be Prevented? Anxiety disorders cannot be prevented; however, there are psychological techniques you can learn to control or lessen symptoms, often completely get rid of them.
Ways To Make Treatment More Effective.
Many people with anxiety disorders benefit from joining a self-help or support group and sharing their problems and achievements with others who have the same problems. Talking with a trusted friend or mental health professional can also provide support.
Stress management techniques and meditation can help people with anxiety disorders calm themselves and may enhance the effects of therapy. There is preliminary evidence that aerobic exercise may have a calming effect. Since caffeine, certain illicit drugs, and even some over-the-counter cold medications can aggravate the symptoms of anxiety disorders, they should be avoided. Check with your physician or pharmacist before taking any additional medications.
Your family is very important in the recovery of your anxiety disorder. Ideally, the family should be supportive but not help perpetuate their loved one’s symptoms. Family members should not trivialize the disorder or demand improvement without treatment.
