Couple & Marital Problems

Relationships require work and are bound to face challenges large and small. Simple, everyday stressors can strain an intimate relationship, and major sources of stress may threaten the stability of the relationship. As long as each partner is willing to address the issue at hand and participate in developing a solution, most relationship problems are manageable, but when challenges are left unaddressed, tension mounts, poor habits develop, and the health and longevity of the relationship are in jeopardy.

  • We study the impact of stress and strain on couple relationships
  • We identify psychological issues associated with relationship problems
  • We offer therapy for relationships and marriage
  • We support when relationship problems point towards abuse.
  • Diabetes

    Adherence, Exercise, Medicine & Diet.

How do we help a person with diabetes?

We help patients change their behaviors to gradually improve eating habits, activity levels and their overall outlook. We help patients learn effective strategies to ensure they regularly test blood glucose, take their medications and complete other diabetes self-management activities.

Why is it important to control diabetes?

Out of control blood sugar levels can lead to serious short term problems such as hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, or diabetic ketoacidosis. In the long run, uncontrolled blood sugar can also damage the vessels that supply blood to important organs, like the heart, kidneys, eyes, and nerves.

    Relation between Depression & Diabetes?

Poor control of diabetes can cause symptoms that look like depression. During the day, high or low blood sugar may make you feel tired or anxious. Low blood sugar levels can also lead to hunger and eating too much. However current research suggest that diabetes increase depression vice versa.

    Do antidepressants cause diabetes?

As study participants took higher levels of antidepressants for longer periods of time, diabetes incidence increased. The reasons appear to be two-fold: Most antidepressant medications are known to cause weight gain, which may lead to increased insulin resistance that can ultimately cause diabetes.

    Case Studies
  • Cardiology

Psychological symptoms are strongly associated with coronary heart disease (CHD), and many psychological treatments are offered following cardiac events or procedures.

Psychological interventions for coronary heart disease

Heart attacks and cardiac surgery may be frightening and traumatic, and can lead some patients to experience psychological problems. In addition, some psychological characteristics are linked to the development and progression of cardiac complaints. Psychological treatments for depression, anxiety, stress or maladaptive behaviours are sometimes offered to patients, either individually or as part of a comprehensive package of cardiac rehabilitation. Evidence suggest that psychological interventions produce small to moderate reductions in cardiac mortality.

We offer services in dealing with stress and stress related problems, Sleep disorders, Hypertension and help patients to adhere to treatments and lifestyle changes.

  • Obesity

Obesity results from the consumption of more food than the body can use. Excess alcohol intake and sedentary lifestyle also contribute to weight gain as well as a host of other health problems.

Three key measures are used in assessing obesity:

    • Body mass index (BMI)
    • Waist circumference
    • Risk factors for diseases and conditions associated with obesity

Other risk factors that are associated with obesity and can have a negative impact on health include:

    • High blood pressure (hypertension)
    • High LDL-cholesterol (“bad” cholesterol)
    • Low HDL-cholesterol (“good” cholesterol)
    • High triglycerides
    • High blood glucose (sugar)
    • Family history of premature heart disease
    • Physical inactivity or a sedentary lifestyle
    • Cigarette smoking

    How we help

    • Cognitive behavioral therapy
    • Behavioural interventions
    • Individual therapy
    • Weight management
    • Adherence to treatment.

Training Methods

  • Case workups

    Learning from the masters.

With vast experience of clinical work behind them, seniour therapists will train you in individual case workups and clinical formulations. A clinical formulation, also known as case formulation, is a theoretically-based explanation or conceptualisation of the information obtained from a clinical assessment. It offers a hypothesis about the cause and nature of the presenting problems and is considered an adjunct or alternative approach to the more categorical approach of psychiatric diagnosis.

Screening and Treatment should maximize patient function within specific and realistic goals. The initial modality should be chosen on the basis of the following and you will learn how to do

    • Clinical assessments
    • Understand and identify presence of other disorders
    • Identifying various stressors
    • Patient preferences based on their cultural aspects and
    • How they have reacted to previous treatment would helps in clinical formulation to help the patient in a better way.
    Case Studies
  • Experiential learning

Ignorant men raise questions: Intelligent learn from experience

Experiential learning is the process of learning through experience, and is more specifically defined as “learning through reflection on doing”.  We strongly believe that hands-on learning is a form of experiential learning. We expect you to handle the cases under supervision.

    1. Concrete Experience – (a new experience of situation is encountered, or a reinterpretation of existing experience).
    2. Reflective Observation (of the new experience. Of particular importance are any inconsistencies between experience and understanding).
    3. Abstract Conceptualization (Reflection gives rise to a new idea, or a modification of an existing abstract concept).
    4. Active Experimentation (the learner applies them to the world around them to see what results).

As the method of training continues with didactic teaching and involving all the participants in self-work, understanding supporting each other and learning from every interaction. You will also be provided with clinical cases to work up and present to the group for clinical evaluation and discussion.

  • Supervision

It is highly mandatory to undergo supervision if you want to pursue career with us. Supervision consists of experiential exercises, theoretical input, skills practice sessions, case discussions, case studies and time for reflecting on one’s own practice.

We follow both group supervision versus one to one supervision

Working under supervision means that a counsellor or psychotherapist uses the services of another counsellor or psychotherapist to review their work with clients, their professional development, and often their personal development as well. Supervision is a professional service, rather than a managerial role, and for students and professionals who work in institutions, supervision and management will normally be entirely separate. The supervisor acts not as a ‘boss’, but as a consultant.

    Assessment:

There will be assignments set between each month (mainly practical in nature) culminating in a recorded session and at the end of the course a case study (3,000- 3,500 words) need to be submitted. All the work will be assessed and marked, and you need to obtain specific grade to continue work with us in the future.
